Why use a broker instead of going direct?

You can buy insurance direct from an insurer, or through a comparison site, or you can hand the job to a broker. Most people never consider the third one. A broker reads the wording, compares what the policies pay, and stays on the file at renewal.

A broker works for you, not the insurer. Kapi Insurance is an Auckland-based insurance broker and licensed Financial Advice Provider. We read the fine print, check your cover protects what you own, and confirm you're not paying more than you should.

## Three ways to buy insurance, compared

Each route gives you a different level of advice, choice and ongoing support.

### Direct from the insurer

- - You deal directly with the insurance company
- - Limited to that insurer's products only
- - No independent advice on whether the cover suits your situation
- - No ongoing policy management

### Comparison website

- - Shows prices from a range of insurers
- - Usually focused on price, not cover quality
- - No personalised advice or policy review
- - No ongoing policy management

### Insurance broker

- ✓ Works for you, not the insurer
- ✓ Reads the policy wording, exclusions and limits
- ✓ Recommends cover based on your actual situation
- ✓ Reviews your cover every year so you're never caught short

## How does an insurance broker work?

An insurance broker is a regulated professional who arranges insurance on your behalf. An insurer's call centre rep sells one company's products. A broker's job is to understand what you own, find cover that fits it, and explain the difference.

Brokers are licensed by the Financial Markets Authority (FMA) as Financial Advice Providers. Whether you're in Auckland, Wellington or Christchurch, that means the same thing: your broker is legally required to act in your best interests and follow a strict code of conduct.

Day to day, that means reviewing what you have, recommending what fits, arranging the policy, then checking the numbers again at every renewal.

## Is insurance cheaper through a broker or direct?

The insurer pays us a commission when we arrange your cover, and your premium is the same as going direct. A broker does not add a margin on top of the insurer's price, and we will not pretend the opposite either: a broker is not automatically cheaper, because some direct-only brands price policies a broker cannot place.

Some brokers charge a fee for certain types of work. Kapi Insurance is upfront about how we're paid, and we'll explain it before you commit to anything, so there are no surprises.

The honest pitch is not "cheaper". It is that price is the only thing you can compare on your own, and price is the least informative number on a policy. What we compare is the cover behind it.

The exclusions sit deep in the wording. Reading them before you sign is the whole job.

## Benefits of using a broker

Finding a policy is the easy part. Here's what our clients get beyond that.

- **Cover that fits your situation**: We check that your policy covers what you think it covers. No gaps you missed. No exclusions buried on page 34. And no underinsurance surprises when you need to claim.
- **Annual policy review**: Life changes. You renovate the kitchen, buy a new car, or pick up expensive camera gear. We review your cover each year to confirm it still fits what you own and how you live.
- **Underinsurance checks**: Underinsurance is common enough to be worth checking. We check your sum insured, replacement values and cover limits. The goal is simple: you should not be caught short if something goes wrong.
- **Independent advice you can trust**: Insurance policies are full of exclusions, conditions and fine print. We read the wording so you don't have to, then tell you plainly what's covered and what's not. That independent perspective is what separates a broker from buying direct.

## Why is comparing insurance so hard on your own?

Comparing insurance properly in New Zealand is close to impossible for one person, and that is not your fault. House, contents and car insurance has nothing like the switching sites you use for power or broadband, so comparing five insurers means filling in five quote forms yourself. Each quote expires after a set window too, so you cannot bank them up slowly over a few months.

Even with every quote in front of you, the prices are not comparing like with like, because the wordings differ underneath. One insurer caps unspecified jewellery at $3,000 per item, another at $5,000 per event for all jewellery combined. One depreciates a three-year-old laptop, another waits until five years. Two policies that look identical on price can behave completely differently on the day you claim.

Kapi Insurance does this comparison for a living. We compare the cover rather than the premium alone: the sub-limits, the exclusions, the excess structures and the settlement terms. Then we tell you plainly which policy fits what you own.

### Same price, different policy

- • Jewellery limits: per item at one insurer, per event at another
- • Tech depreciation starting at 3 years, or at 5
- • Accidental damage included, or a paid extra
- • Different extra excesses for theft from cars or let homes

Examples drawn from current NZ policy wordings. Details vary by insurer and tier.
