Why use an insurance broker in New Zealand?
Most Kiwis buy insurance direct from the insurer or through a comparison website. But there's a third option many people don't know about - using an insurance broker.
A broker works for you, not the insurer. They read the fine print, check your cover actually protects what you own, and make sure you're not paying more than you should. And the best part? It typically costs you nothing extra.
Three ways to buy insurance - compared
Not all buying options are created equal. Here's how they stack up.
Direct from the insurer
- - You deal directly with the insurance company
- - Limited to that insurer's products only
- - No independent advice on whether the cover actually suits you
- - No ongoing policy management
Comparison website
- - Shows prices from a range of insurers
- - Usually focused on price, not cover quality
- - No personalised advice or policy review
- - No ongoing policy management
Insurance broker
- ✓ Works for you, not the insurer
- ✓ Reads the policy wording, exclusions and limits
- ✓ Recommends cover based on your actual situation
- ✓ Reviews your cover every year so you're never caught short
How does an insurance broker work?
An insurance broker is a licensed professional who arranges insurance on your behalf. Unlike an insurer's call centre, a broker's job is to understand what you actually own and find cover that matches - not just sell you a policy.
Brokers in New Zealand must be licensed by the Financial Markets Authority (FMA) as a Financial Advice Provider. This means they're legally required to act in their clients' best interests and follow a strict code of conduct.
We review what you have, recommend what fits, arrange the policy, and then keep it up to date - including checking your numbers at every renewal.
What does a broker cost?
In most cases, using a broker costs you nothing extra. Brokers are paid a commission by the insurer when they place a policy. This commission is built into the premium - the same premium you'd pay if you went direct.
Some brokers charge a small broker fee for certain types of work, but this is always disclosed upfront. At Kapi Insurance, our team is transparent about how we're paid and will explain our fee structure before you commit to anything.
What you get in return - someone who checks the policy wording, spots the gaps, and keeps everything up to date year after year - often far outweighs any cost. Most of our clients end up with better cover at a comparable price.
Benefits of using a broker
A good broker does more than find you a policy. Here's what our clients get when they work with us.
Cover that actually fits
We make sure your policy actually covers what you think it covers. No gaps, no exclusions you didn't know about, and no underinsurance surprises when you need to claim.
Policy review
We review your cover each year to make sure it still fits. Life changes - you renovate, buy a new car, or pick up expensive gear. Your insurance should keep up, and we make sure it does.
Underinsurance checks
Many Kiwi families are underinsured without knowing it. We check your sum insured, replacement values and cover limits so you're not caught short if something goes wrong.
Expert advice
Insurance policies are full of exclusions, conditions and fine print. We read the policy wording so you don't have to, and tell you what's covered and what's not. That independent perspective is what sets a broker apart from buying direct.
